ASPS Study Finds Women “Very Satisfied” with Fat Transfer Buttock Augmentation

Buttock augmentation is in right now. Women want the shapely derriere of Jennifer Lopez or Kim Kardashian.

In fact, buttock augmentation has been increasing in popularity over the last few years. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were 799 procedures performed in 2009 and 858 in 2012.

To understand why more women are choosing buttock augmentation, the ASPS conducted a study. The results of this study were presented at the annual Plastic Surgery The Meeting in October.

Overall, women who received a buttock augmentation using fat transfer were very happy with their results.

The procedure these patients had was as follows:

  • Patients received liposuction in the thighs, saddlebags, sub-gluteal region and flanks.
  • The fat was harvested.
  • It was then injected into the buttocks. This increased its size and contoured them.

One of the cautionary measures the plastic surgeons took during the study was not to inject too much fat into one area. This could have caused the newly grafted fat tissue to die, which would not have given patients the results they were expecting.

After their procedures, fifty-eight patients (98% of study participants) were asked how satisfied they were with the outcome. They had to rate their level of satisfaction from 1 to 4 with 4 being the best result. Almost all of the patients, except for one, reported they were “very satisfied” with the results of the procedure they received.

Why Autologous Fat Tissue Gluteoplasty Satisfies

When women look in the mirror, they usually don’t see just one thing they want to change about their body. They often see two or three things they wish were different. Most of the time, it’s the removal of fat from an area or two, along with reshaping.

With autologous fat transfer to the buttocks (also referred to as a Brazilian butt lift), women can achieve that slim, trim look they desire while also getting curvier and fuller buttocks.

That’s the best part of choosing to have fat transfer for a buttock augmentation. You receive more than one great result from the procedure.

The other benefit is that since fat is used for the augmentation, the buttocks look and feel natural. The fat transfer procedure is well known for having little to no complications after the procedure. Of importance to note is that there are virtually no scars with this procedure and recovery times are very short (about a week of mild discomfort and swelling).

A Word of Caution to Woman Desiring a Buttock Augmentation

David Reath, MD, the ASPS Public Education Committee chair has this to say:

Unfortunately, the increase in women desiring a fuller bottom has led to a rise in illegal buttock injections being performed by people with little to no plastic surgery training. It’s important for the public to know that buttock augmentation can be done safely, with excellent cosmetic results, when performed by board-certified plastic surgeons.
