Many people who see wrinkles and sagging believe all they need is a facelift. While a facelift can improve the appearance of wrinkles and correct the sagging that naturally occurs with age, it doesn’t give people all of the results they want. Many times, they also need fat grafting.
A facelift can produce smoother skin. However, the loss of volume in the face cannot be corrected with a lift. And it is that loss of volume that can also cause wrinkles and sagging. By replacing the fat lost, the face will look fuller and the skin will be more taut.
What Is Facial Fat Grafting?
Fat grafting or fat transfer is a procedure in which a plastic surgeon removes fat from another part of the body with liposuction.
Most surgeons will ask the patient where he or she would like to have the fat removed from such as the abdominal area, thighs, or buttocks.
The abdominal fat tissue has the most plentiful source of stem cells and is the most recommended area to harvest from.
Once the fat is removed, it is sent to an FDA-registered laboratory for processing. After the processing is complete, the adipose tissue (fat) is cryogenically preserved and stored until the plastic surgeon is ready to inject it into the patient’s face.
Autologous fat transfer to the face is done over multiple sessions. Over the course of these sessions, patients will begin to gradually see their face transforming into the younger version they used to see in the mirror.
